Safety
Safety is Cargill's number one priority. It is also the most important area in which Cargill redefines the steel business. We refuse to accept the conventional view that accidents are an inherent part of steel making or processing. As a result, our organization has one of the lowest accident records in the entire industry and our mills and service processing facilities have operated for years without a lost-time accident!

Safety at Cargill is a core value. We understand that if we make safety a core value and always put safety first, quality and efficiency are sure to follow. The deeply ingrained attitudes and work habits that help our employees avoid accidents are the same characteristics that enable us to produce ton after ton of high quality steel. The ideal we strive for is an error-free environment: Zero defects, Zero accidents. Safety is an ongoing process with us, and it receives active support from all levels of management.

Training is a way of life. Inspections are frequent and thorough. All incidents are carefully investigated, causes identified, and appropriate corrective action taken. Safety statistics are compiled and used to uncover potential problem areas. All new equipment is evaluated with accident prevention uppermost in mind. And 1 out of every 3 people throughout our organization has emergency medical training.

As a part of our quality process, Cargill's safety process succeeds because the requirements that make it work are not left to chance. They are spelled out clearly, explained carefully and reinforced vigorously.

The result is a safety record that has won high praise from state and local governments, from the American Iron and Steel Institute, and from many others inside and outside our industry who can appreciate how hard we're working to keep our people safe.
